However, for rugs to truly please the eye for many years with their immaculate, soft pile and vivid colours, we must devote a little effort to their care. And here, let us emphasise one thing: there is no single universal recipe for success. The treatments to which we subject rugs vary depending on the material from which a particular rug was made.

Synthetic rugs

The matter is simplest when it comes to rugs made of synthetic fabrics, namely those made from acrylic, polypropylene, polyamide or polyester. Above all, these materials are highly resistant to dirt and have antistatic properties, so in most cases regular vacuuming is entirely sufficient. Moreover, if a stubborn stain does appear, we can safely use one of the specialised chemical products available on the market.

Wool rugs

If, on the other hand, we have wool rugs, then, as one might easily guess, the matter becomes slightly more complicated. Naturally, just as with any other rug, the basic care procedure is vacuuming. This treatment is intended to remove dust and sand accumulating in the pile, which could cause permanent damage to the fibres and consequently diminish the product’s visual and functional qualities. When vacuuming wool rugs, it is advisable to follow a few simple guidelines. This will ensure thorough cleaning of the surface and protect it from damage. First, it is worth investing in a special brush with an adjustable pile length, which will enable us to care for the rug optimally. Second, vacuuming should be carried out regularly, preventing heavy soiling from developing. Finally, third, vacuuming should be done with a gentle, sweeping motion, without applying excessive pressure to the surface; otherwise, the rug could be damaged.

And what if rugs succumb to more serious soiling? Great caution is required here! As advised by a consultant at the Dywante rug shop, we should try to remove the stain as quickly as possible using a clean towel or cloth. However, if this does not produce the desired effect, the rug must not be scrubbed too vigorously. In such a situation, it is best to take it to a specialist, reputable cleaning facility.

Silk rugs

Silk rugs are the essence of luxury and, to put it plainly, among the most valuable and expensive rugs. As such, they naturally require special treatment. As with other rugs, the basic care procedure is vacuuming. If we happen to stain a silk rug, under no circumstances should we try to remove the stain using chemical products. At most, we can try to remove the dirt by moving a clean towel across the rug’s surface, but if there are no visible results, we should promptly entrust it to an experienced professional.

Rugs – general guidelines

We have already learned the secrets of caring for individual types of rugs, so now it is worth remembering a few general guidelines that apply to all models. Above all, if we want rugs to serve us for a truly long time, we must place them thoughtfully. Excessive exposure to sunlight should be avoided, as it will cause the pile to fade, weaken its structure and, in the longer term, quickly destroy the rug. At the same time, we must not fall into the opposite extreme and, when we own truly valuable rugs, hide them in a wardrobe or storage loft for fear of damage. This will have exactly the opposite effect to that intended – the rug will deteriorate, and creases and abrasions will appear on it. Let us remember one thing: rugs are functional objects and, as such, like to be displayed in a suitably prepared place.
