PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. plans to electrify the 27-kilometre section of railway line from Węgliniec to Zgorzelec by 2019. This will mean that the international route running from the country’s eastern to western border can be served by electric locomotives. The investment will shorten travel times, including by eliminating the need to change from electric to diesel locomotives in Węgliniec. The line’s capacity will improve, creating new opportunities for regional and long-distance services.

Electrification will also improve freight traffic in south-western Poland. Freight transport will become more efficient and faster, making it more competitive with road transport. The “Electrification of Railway Lines Nos. 274 and 278 on the Węgliniec–Zgorzelec Section” project will be implemented using the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The estimated cost of the investment is PLN 70 million. Design work and construction are scheduled for 2017–2019.

Easier rail travel in Lower Silesia

The electrified Węgliniec–Zgorzelec route is another project from the National Railway Programme in Lower Silesia. A week ago, PLK announced a tender for the modernisation of the Legnica–Rudna Gwizdanów line. The electrification of the Węgliniec–Zgorzelec section, together with the earlier modernisation of the E 30 Opole–Wrocław–Węgliniec line, will create even better opportunities for passenger and freight transport and improve the quality of connections from the east to the west of Poland.

PLK to electrify railway lines

By 2023, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. plans to electrify, among others, the Ocice–Rzeszów, Lublin–Stalowa Wola Rozwadów, Ełk–Korsze and Szczecin Główny–state border (Tantow) routes. The line electrification projects included in the National Railway Programme will make rail travel throughout Poland even faster and more convenient. Rail connections within and between regions will improve.
