Dominika had never worried about her health. Always full of energy and positive about life, she faced every challenge head-on. Unfortunately, in July 2016, doctors diagnosed Dominika with acute myeloid leukemia. A fight for every day of her life began. It is now known that Dominika’s only chance of recovery is a transplant of blood stem cells from an unrelated Donor. Unfortunately, despite more than 1,100,000 potential Donors registered in the Polish Poltransplant registry and more than 29 million in databases worldwide, there is currently no Donor genetically compatible with Dominika.
– Dominika initially had 11 donors; all of them were ruled out – says her friend Anna Wolska. – First, I wrote to the media asking them to encourage people to register online, on the DKMS website, but I decided that might not be enough. Then I wrote to the Foundation, asking it to organize this campaign.
Dominika is in hospital, waiting for another round of chemotherapy. Her disease has gone into remission. – I would really like as many people as possible to register. It increases the chance of finding a donor for her and of a complete recovery – adds Michał Wiszniowski, Dominika’s fiancé.
As Artur Koszla from the DKMS Foundation told us, only once in DKMS’s history has it happened that a person who came to register during a campaign for a specific patient in need became an actual donor of blood-forming stem cells for that very person. This could happen again. Come and register.
Registration during this Donor Day will be carried out by taking a swab from the inside of the cheek.

Who can become a donor?
Any healthy person between 18 and 55 years of age, weighing at least 50 kg (without significant excess weight), can register. It takes only a moment and involves a preliminary medical interview, completing a form with personal details, and taking a swab from the mucous membrane on the inside of the cheek. The collected sample will be used to determine antigen-matching characteristics, and if the donor’s genetic code matches that of the patient, a transplant can take place. Everyone who wants to register should bring an identity document showing their PESEL number.
