2 January at the film discussion club: “Gimme Danger”. With his new film, Jim Jarmusch pays tribute to the legendary band The Stooges and its frontman Iggy Pop. Despite being infused with punk energy, “Gimme Danger” is not merely a fan’s tribute. Iggy Pop and the musicians of The Stooges tell Jarmusch stories of their successes and failures, the bright and dark sides of a dangerous life, and recall their greatest provocations. The film’s central theme is the search for freedom and creative independence. The film features excerpts from their unforgettable concerts and greatest hits, such as “No Fun” and the immortal “I Wanna Be Your Dog”.

9 January “Marie’s Story” is a moving fact-based cinematic portrait of Marie Heurtin, who was deaf and blind from birth and lived in France at the end of the 19th century. Fourteen-year-old Marie Heurtin, who had lived in a world of darkness since birth, was like a wild animal trapped in a cage of fear and confusion. She could not communicate, and no one gave her any hope. Only when she comes under the care of Sister Marguerite, who sees her potential, does the girl slowly begin to awaken to real life.

16 January “Paterson”, the revelation of this year’s Cannes festival and Jim Jarmusch’s best film in years, tells a humorous story about how life is poetry and everyone can find happiness in their own way. Paterson is a city bus driver. He lacks nothing. He loves his wife, who is full of crazy ideas and creates a new plan for the future every day. The man has time for his passion—writing poetry—walks with his dog and meetings with a group of eccentric friends. Among them are a companion nursing a broken heart over a pint, a liberated single woman who spends her evenings at a bar, and an endlessly complaining colleague who envies Paterson’s peace of mind. However, as a result of a comical chain of events, the titular hero’s stoic calm is put to the test.

23 January the Argentine Oscar candidate “The Distinguished Citizen”. The calendar of Daniel Mantovani, an internationally renowned Argentine writer who has achieved everything—including the Nobel Prize—is packed with engagements and prestigious events. But Mantovani unexpectedly cancels his appointments to travel to the small town he comes from and which is the source of his inspiration. He is to receive the Distinguished Citizen medal. The meeting between the world-famous author and the residents of Salas is filled with amusing misunderstandings. Soon, however, the atmosphere becomes tense, and the differences between the cosmopolitan writer and the small-town community prove impossible to reconcile.

30 January “The Student”. The main character, a teenage boy named Veniamin, believes he knows everything about morality. He knows what is right and wrong; he knows how rules should be followed and whom they must be protected from. Veniamin’s behaviour puts those around him to a serious test. The bright-eyed young man, previously intimidated even in his interactions with girls his age, changes in the blink of an eye into a modern Tartuffe, capable of forcing a crowd to call black white. The only person who tries to save the protagonist is his biology teacher, Jelena Lvovna. As a result, she herself, like any decent person who challenges fanaticism, will need help.
