The choir from Municipal School Complex No. 2 in Bolesławiec was established 16 years ago. It has repeatedly taken part in national and international competitions, festivals and choral gatherings. So far, it has given more than 150 concerts and participated in the recording of the album “The Four Seasons” at the Polish Radio studio in Wrocław. It has won numerous choral awards.
Melikos cooperates with many children’s and youth choirs from Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Since 2006, it has participated in the Nationwide School Choir Development Programme “Singing Poland”. (The programme is now called “Choral Academy – Singing Poland”.) Since 2014, the choir has worked in two ensembles: Melikos Choir 1 (students in the upper grades of primary school and middle school) and Melikos Children’s Choir 2 (students in grades 1–6 of primary school).
Both groups gave concerts in Wrocław this month. On 2 December, Melikos 1 performed on the stage of Wrocław University of Science and Technology as part of the 43rd Barbórka Festival of Academic Choirs, during which it performed the following pieces: “Sesere eeye” (a traditional song and dance from the islands in the Torres Strait), “Noyana” (a traditional South African song), “Clear The Line” (an American song arranged by Mary Goetze), “Sing, Sing” (lyrics and music by Alan Woods) and “Have a Merry One” (lyrics and music by Mary Lynn Lightfoot). The choir was the youngest performer at the festival.
On Saturday, 17 December, Melikos Children’s Choir 2 performed at the Academy of Music in Wrocław. Our choir was among the 250 ensembles that performed at the final concert of the “Choral Academy – Singing Poland” programme. In the first part of the concert, the choristers performed excerpts from Jan Krutul’s suite for children’s choir “Let’s Play Music” and songs from Disney films. In the second part, the combined choirs, together with an orchestra from Wałbrzych, performed seven Polish Christmas carols arranged by Witold Lutosławski, as well as a song from the film “The Chorus”.
The founder and conductor of the Melikos choir is Izabela Kulpa.
