When reading books, readers forget, even if only for a few moments, about everyday life; they relax, motivate themselves to overcome difficulties, feel supported in solving problems, begin to accept themselves and, quite often, discover new goals in life. Bibliotherapy is intended for people of all ages and is particularly helpful for children who are not yet able to cope, for example, with childhood fears or emotions that are difficult to describe.
In November, Bolesławiec hosted its first Bibliotherapy Day celebrations, held at Primary School No. 4. The initiative came from the Polish Bibliotherapy Association, based in Wrocław, which was marking the 19th anniversary of its founding that day. The school was decorated with posters reading “Reading helps. A book is good for everything”; during breaks, children read fairy tales, while at the Municipal Pedagogical Library, which is a friend of the school, readers could learn about the available bibliotherapy literature, displayed in the library’s reading room. The school’s Drama Club, under the supervision of Janina Golsztajn, performed the play “The Book” at the District Complex of Special Education Institutions.
