Terrorism is currently one of the greatest challenges facing the modern world. “Although there are no signals of this type of threat in Poland, considerable emphasis should be placed on education concerning appropriate behaviour in the event of such a threat,” say the officers. The Alfa educational and information programme, developed by the Prevention Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław in cooperation with the Voivodeship Office, is addressed to all residents of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It is consistent with the objectives of the National Anti-Terrorism Programme for 2015–2019, which defines the tasks of the police.
At present, children and young people have little awareness and knowledge about terrorism. Fragments of information picked up at home and media reports are usually young people’s only sources of information about terrorism. “Therefore, a key issue in implementing the programme will be educating children and young people about safety in the event that they become participants in terrorist incidents,” the police officers say.
The method of conducting the classes, as well as the teaching materials developed and used during them, has been adapted to the individual age groups. The project is being implemented with financial support from the PZU Foundation.
Police officers will provide children and young people from Bolesławiec County with education on appropriate behaviour in the event of a terrorist threat until the end of the 2016/2017 school year.
