“WE LIVE AMONG FLOWERS – CLOSER TO NATURE” is the slogan and guiding idea of our competition addressed to the residents of Bolesławiec. The city authorities have put considerable effort (and money) into renovating the façades of the tenement buildings along entire streets; the historic Market Square, with the fresh colours of its plasterwork, and the town’s pride on the Bóbr River, the impressive Town Hall, are a pleasure to behold. Considerable financial resources are allocated to maintaining the greenery of the city’s squares and parks; new trees and shrubs are being planted.
The city’s beauty will undoubtedly benefit from balconies adorned with flowers, as demonstrated by the spontaneous initiative of residents of, among others, Bolesława Prosa Street, who, following the completion of the renovation of the tenement façades, decorated their balconies with colourful flowers. It is not the only example, although it is the most recent. The need to commune with beauty and nature is gaining increasingly broad acceptance, and this can only be welcomed alongside the dramatic and justified appeals by environmentalists for respect for the broadly understood natural world and the human environment.
We are therefore announcing the COMPETITION FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY FLOWERED BALCONY throughout the city. We will write more extensively about the details—including the prizes and sponsors—in the next issue of “Głos”. If, through a joint effort, we manage to create even a few ecological miniature oases of greenery and beauty in Bolesławiec, we will be fully satisfied. Where to begin? By planting or sowing a few decorative plants in a pot or planter box. In time, caring for them will develop into a lifelong hobby. It is worth giving it a try right away.
