In previous issues of "Głos Bolesławca", a series of articles devoted to the aforementioned parish discussed the period from 1970 to 1983. I would now like to present the more important events of 1984.Like other regions of Poland, our community too deeply experienced the brutal abduction and murder of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko. For a number of days, the Rosary was recited and prayers for peace in the Homeland were said in the parish church at 6 p.m. Another important event was the visit of Bishop Tadeusz Rybak, who on 5 February consecrated the renovated chapel in Bożejowice and the newly built church in Łąka. It should be added here that in the year under discussion, alongside the dean, Fr. Edward Bober, the following priests worked in the parish: Jan Czachor, Zdzisław Michalski and Władysław Stępniak. From June, the last two were replaced by Fathers Tadeusz Kmieć and Piotr Krzywania. In the apostolate of the Word of God, much attention was devoted to catechesis. Even during the burdensome house-to-house pastoral visits, religious instruction was given until 4 p.m. Young people gathered around Fr. Piotr for discussion meetings. Catechesis for newlyweds was held on Sundays at 4 p.m. Catechetical committees were established at the parish and its branches in Bożejowice and Łąka. In addition to the priests, two Sisters Adorers also taught religious instruction. Retreats were another element of the ministry of the Word. The Lenten spiritual exercises took place from 7 to 13 April and were led by Fr. Józef Gołębiowski. He also led the Advent retreat at the end of the year. The words of Sister Joanna Śledzińska, who on 7 August shared her missionary experience from 12 years of work in Cameroon, made a strong impression on the parishioners. Meanwhile, the apostolate of the printed word found expression in the distribution of "L'Osservatore Romano" and "Nowe Życie".The celebration of the holy sacraments was another area of pastoral activity. Before the first confession and Communion of children attending the second grades, six meetings were held with their parents. Then, on 13 May, after arduous preparation, 178 children received Communion for the first time. Confirmation was received mainly by eighth-grade students. This took place on 18 June, when Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz administered the sacrament of Christian maturity to 124 people. The entire sphere of divine worship should also be discussed here. Every Wednesday, two novenas to Our Lady of Perpetual Help were held: for children at 5 p.m. and for adults at 6 p.m. On 2 March, an all-day Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament took place as part of perpetual adoration. During Lent, the Stations of the Cross and Lenten Lamentations were very popular. Before the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a triduum was held, and on the feast of St. Christopher, vehicles were blessed. In October, the Rosary services attracted large numbers of people. Therefore, children were invited every day at 5:15 p.m., and adults at 6 p.m. The feast of All Saints and the procession to the Municipal Cemetery also made a strong impression among the faithful. During Advent, Rorate Masses were celebrated, and at the end of the year a service was held with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The choir and orchestra held an important place among these numerous and varied forms of liturgical activity.A separate discussion is warranted for pilgrimage activity. On 5 August, a farewell for thirty pilgrims walking from Wrocław to Częstochowa from 6 to 15 August was held in the parish church. On 5 September, 48 girls and boys travelled by coach on a pilgrimage to Wambierzyce. On 13 October, young people went on pilgrimage from Wrocław to Trzebnica. Fr. Piotr Krzywania actively participated in all these activities.Food donations received from the United States, Germany, France, the Netherlands and other Western countries were a great help in charitable work. The products sent most frequently were flour and butter. They were distributed to those in need through the Christian Charity Action Committee, in the following order: large families, pensioners and disability-benefit recipients, and young married couples. Food supplies were taken to the homes of the sick. Finally, it should be said that a number of renovation and construction works were carried out in 1984. Among other things, the décor and lighting in the presbytery of the parish church were changed. In April, May and June, a trench more than 3 metres deep was dug in front of the church, at the entrance to the parish house, with a basement and utility rooms located there. Storage buildings for construction materials were erected by the parish house. The amount of liturgical equipment was increased by purchasing two brass sanctuary lamps. They were placed beneath the pedestals of the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. In addition, thanks to the generosity of the fathers’ Rosary circle, a banner bearing images of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Maximilian Kolbe was purchased.
