On 4 January 1995, the traditional New Year’s Meetings of the Town Board were held with broadly understood representatives of the local community: people from the fields of culture and art, teachers, priests, regional society activists, directors of industrial plants, businesspeople, and all those who, through their work in the past year, had left a lasting mark on the history of the town on the Bóbr.
The role of initiator and host of the events fell to the Mayor of the Town, engineer JÓZEF KRÓL, who spoke at length and with great interest about the successes and failures in implementing the town’s development programme. Fortunately, the register of objective achievements gives grounds for complete satisfaction, and Bolesławiec is once again held up as a model of rational management in the difficult period of systemic transformation. To avoid making unsupported claims—in the final days of December 1994 alone, we obtained over PLN 300 million to complete investments, as the only local community apart from Jelenia Góra. This was no coincidence, a matter of luck or sympathy, but the result of the authorities’ efficiency and keeping their finger on the pulse of events. The 1995 budget will close at over PLN 128 billion, and its approval will be the subject of analysis at the next session of the Municipal Council.
As an interesting fact, I will mention that the town will soon receive its first professional television information and tourism film in three language versions, as well as the first extensive scholarly historical monograph since the war, and perhaps other promotional publications too (the professionally produced map-plan of the town published recently and the “Municipal Guide” were well received by users). The painful publishing gap of recent years is slowly being filled, which bodes well for the future. The final note of the New Year’s meeting was an open discussion about commemorating the 50th anniversary of the return of the Western Territories and Bolesławiec to the Motherland. Here, too, full consensus was achieved.
