He died suddenly, unexpectedly for everyone and certainly far too young. In August 1994, he would have turned just 45. He spent exactly half of his life working professionally, beginning at the District Council of the People’s Sports Teams. The People’s Sports Teams were, alongside his professional work, Ludwik’s passion; he served there as a football referee almost until the end of his life.
From 1973 to 1984, he worked at the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre, and during the last ten years he worked intensively at the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre, performing the far from easy duties of administrative manager.
As he himself said, he felt best in the role of organiser of sports and recreational events, but he carried out every task entrusted to him reliably and with passion.
Only those closest to him knew how much effort had to be devoted to the technical and organisational preparation of events such as Blues nad Bobrem, concerts in the amphitheatre, Family Relax Behind the Wheel, fairs, and other outdoor events.
After all, the Forum hall itself and the BOK facilities, with their extensive supporting infrastructure, required considerable organisational effort for normal and smooth operation. Ludwik Gadziński bravely faced these tasks, apparently taking too little care of his own health.
I had the opportunity to admire his organisational skills and great dedication during several Bolesławiec Springs festivals, and especially during the memorable, spectacularly ambitious 1986 Tournament of Cities between Bolesławiec and Sanok. Bolesławiec’s victory in that tournament was also to a considerable extent the result of Ludwik Gadziński’s work. Ludwik was modest and did not know how to take offence. In the most difficult situations, he could summon humour and defuse conflicts with his characteristic tact. He was friendly, and through his kindness he tried to serve everyone—especially those who appreciated his reliability at work and his personality in general.
By dying suddenly, he left two children and his wife Bogumiła, plunging his family, just like all of us—his friends—into deep grief and sorrow. Rest in peace, Dear Friend!
We Said Farewell to Ludwik Gadziński
