Bolesławiec, 1994-03-11
Without a doubt, a local phenomenon has emerged: we have gained not only many allies, but also the genuine acceptance and support of the community. Was this determined by our political independence, our aversion to party infighting, our criticism of the existing state of affairs—including the arrogance and heartlessness of the city authorities—or perhaps by our active programme of change and transformation, conceived with people in mind, specifically the residents of Bolesławiec and their needs? It is difficult to make a definitive judgment today. The fact remains that we all want beneficial changes, new people, wise governance, responsible work, competent decisions, and respect for the voice of public opinion.
Although we do not approve of the formula of party electoral lists promoted by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, as we would prefer to vote for specific individuals of recognised authority in the community, we will nevertheless abide by the new rules of the game provided for by the electoral law. We have already gained the support of several, perhaps even a dozen or so thousand residents of the town on the Bóbr, as evidenced by the following organisations and institutions joining the ELECTORAL FORUM: the Guild of Various Crafts in Bolesławiec, the Association of Merchants in Bolesławiec, the Multi-Branch Crafts Cooperative in Bolesławiec, the Association of Private Transport in Bolesławiec, the Association of Combatants and Former Political Prisoners, the Association of Pensioners and Disability Pensioners in Bolesławiec, and the Polish People's Party in Bolesławiec.
Further discussions are under way concerning other organisations, associations and institutions joining the FORUM, and this can only be a source of joy and satisfaction, as it represents a path towards normality in the life of the city and its residents. We work calmly, without emotion or obstinacy, willing to listen to critical remarks and sound arguments. We believe that common sense, confirmed by the autonomous decisions of voters who want to have councillors and a municipal government as their own representatives acting in their interest, will finally prevail. We are backing people for whom exercising power and obtaining mandates will not go to their heads like soda water, and there are many such people among us: modest, honest, hardworking, wise, responsible for their words and actions, kind and altruistic towards others, sensitive to harm, poverty and deprivation, and possessing high moral standards. They are our candidates for councillor. No one should object to a change of guard; staff rotation is a requirement of genuine democracy. No one is irreplaceable; life has its objective laws, and it is worth remembering that.
There are no queues forming in the ELECTORAL FORUM for future positions; what is striking is the modesty and responsibility of those to whom we would like to entrust the duties of future councillors and stewards of the city. They include teachers, craftsmen, doctors, pensioners, young businesspeople, intellectuals and ordinary, everyday residents—people who have earned distinction through their work for the town on the Bóbr, inhabitants of today’s impoverished districts who would like to do as much as possible there for their neighbours and acquaintances. There are no rabble-rousers or demagogues who enjoy honours but avoid work, because it is their own achievements and organisational talent in the sphere of community and civic service that constitute a passport to future work for the city as a councillor. These people remain committed to the idea of organic work; they deeply believe in the possibility of agreement, cooperation and the development of our city. They are worth supporting with your vote.
