SCAMMERS COME IN MANY GUISES
A n o f f i c i a l...
Usually trustworthy-looking and elegantly dressed. They may claim to be a meter reader from an energy company, gas utility, or similar organization. If you do not know them or they behave unusually (looking around, asking questions unrelated to the meter, etc.), demand to see their employee ID. If they really represent an institution, your caution will not put them off. If in doubt, arrange another appointment, first checking their credibility with the housing estate administration or the relevant institution.
A trader...
They may introduce themselves as a door-to-door salesperson. They offer various goods for sale or propose buying items such as antiques that may be in your home. This may all be intended to gain entry to your home, assess the value of the property inside and learn about its security measures. If you are going to make a transaction at home, arrange it for a time when you will not be alone.
A worker...
They may say they want to repair or inspect something. Their primary aim is to search for valuables and steal them. If someone visiting you offers to perform a service, always give yourself time to think so that you can verify the credibility of the company they represent. Call its owner. Find out about the quality and prices of the services provided. The offer presented may not be the most advantageous.
When commissioning a service, always try to draw up a preliminary contract specifying the work to be performed, the amount of the advance payment, the maximum price for the service and the firm deadline for its completion.
REMEMBER:
THE CRIMINAL MAY BE A MAN OR A WOMAN, AND MAY ACT ALONE OR IN A GROUP. TO INCREASE THEIR CREDIBILITY, THEY OFTEN FIRST GAIN CHILDREN’S TRUST. KEEP THEM OUTSIDE – THIS WAY, YOU CAN BE MORE CERTAIN THAT THEY WILL NOT ROB YOU.
