The Christian-National Union has existed for four years now. Although it is a significant political formation (the third-largest parliamentary group in the Sejm of the previous term, and fourth nationwide in the most recent elections), it appeared in Bolesławiec only recently, with the arrival of Mr Arkadiusz Urban after a period of study in London. During martial law, he co-founded the Bolesławiec Student Committee for Social Resistance; he was an activist in the Independent Students’ Association of the University of Wrocław, a former political prisoner, a founding member of ZChN in the United Kingdom and former president of the ZChN Circle in London, editor-in-chief of the London-Warsaw publication “Nasze Porozumienie,” and a doctoral student of contemporary history. In the most recent elections, he was the number-one candidate of the Catholic Electoral Committee “Ojczyzna” in the Jelenia Góra Voivodeship. At his initiative, several new ZChN centres have recently been established in our area, including in Zgorzelec, Lwówek Śl., Olszyna and Węgliniec, as well as in Bolesławiec, where the formal establishment of a new ZChN Circle took place on 2 December 1993.
The founding meeting was attended, among others, by activists of “Civitas Christiana,” with its president Tadeusz Grzesik; members of the Society of Lovers of Lviv and the Eastern Borderlands, with president Stanisława Balawender and vice-president Anastazja Sulik; Jadwiga Bobek, head of the Bolesławiec branch of the Society of Friends of Children; former director of KGM “Konrad,” engineer Antoni Skobliński; as well as Catholic and parish activists, educators and teachers.
During the meeting, the results and consequences of the latest parliamentary elections, the integration processes of the centre-right (with particular emphasis on the Jelenia Góra Voivodeship), and the development of an accurate image of the Union were discussed, among other matters. The participants also addressed next year’s local-government elections and noted the need to convene a regional ZChN programme conference with the participation of representatives of the party’s national authorities. At the end of the inaugural meeting, the Circle’s authorities were elected, with A. Urban unanimously elected as president and the Management Board composition proposed by him.
