Mrs. Maria Modl of Teatralna Street is concerned about the condition of the cemetery monuments in our town, especially the “ownerless” ones, such as the figure of Christ embracing children, standing at the cemetery entrance. When this beautiful Breuer sculpture was vandalically moved from the courtyard of the former Orphanage, it was deprived of its granite pedestal and damaged in many places. Now it certainly requires restoration, as do many other sculptures and monuments. Mrs. Maria appeals to people who are sensitive to beauty, asking someone from this group to take on the role of Waldorff and, like Mr. Jerzy in Warsaw, initiate a collection for the restoration of cemetery monuments. Mrs. Maria proposes that the collection, with the participation of well-known Bolesławiec personalities, be held around All Souls’ Day.
In our opinion, however, this will not be enough, because Bolesławiec is not Warsaw, and one or two days a year, given the population of our town, may produce very limited results. We propose that a permanently installed, well-secured collection box be placed in the cemetery, or that the Municipal Services Company sell donation bricks for the restoration of cemetery monuments—either as an alternative or in parallel.
