The renovated appearance of the old town, specifically the market square, is pleasing to the eye, writes a Reader from Prusa Street (name known to the editorial office), but it is a pity that while doing one thing, another is being eliminated. The tenement house at Rynek No. 6 was decorated with figures of Flora and Fauna. Although they had suffered losses, they could surely have been restored on that occasion. Apparently, someone even came forward with an offer to carry out such a task. However, it was probably decided to remove the sculptures. We are getting rid of old, beautiful things in this town with a “light hand.” Not long ago, the suspension bridge over the Bóbr was removed; earlier, Schinkel’s work on Kubika Street was propped up with crude stakes, and the architectural form of the monument by the pond was disfigured (I have no objection to changing its symbol and political meaning). The elephant and the jug with a cup, which once stood in the squares, used to be an ornament and tourist attraction of Bolesławiec. Tourists took the obligatory photographs of themselves.
All of this is now history... The Municipal Office will certainly explain everything by citing a lack of money, but it is not impossible that the town’s residents would have helped save these beautiful things—of course, if someone had provided more information. Why do the town authorities avoid consulting residents in such matters, even through the widely read “Głos Bolesławca”? Is it easier to remove things?
