Organising a kind of “field session”—a coach tour for councillors around the city and surrounding area—was a good idea. Among other places, they visited the overflowing rubbish dump in the village of Łąka, whose condition left no doubt that a new investment in this area was an absolute necessity. As is known, it was located more than 20 km from Bolesławiec, in Trzebień, on the site of former Soviet military training grounds. The site will be developed in accordance with environmental requirements by the company “Ekolog” from Poznań, and time is pressing.
The next stop on the tour was the municipal sewage treatment plant located outside the city, in the Staszica district. The facility had already been partially commissioned, and would achieve full operational capacity in 1995. It was impressive in size and, more importantly, would to a significant extent make it possible to dispose of the pollutants that had previously poisoned the Bóbr River. On the occasion, the city councillors also viewed from the coach windows the estate of detached houses in Zabobrze (it was raining, which made longer walks difficult), the so-called industrial heating plant, which heated part of the town on the Bóbr, the municipal waterworks with a water treatment station (we would not experience good-quality, good-tasting water for many years to come), as well as the interior of the Town Hall, which was then undergoing renovation.
Knowledge of the city’s condition and needs will result in decisions concerning next year’s budget.
