As of 1 February, in accordance with the Resolution of the Municipal Council dated 22 December 1992, the names of some streets are being changed.
Plac Armii Czerwonej will become BANKOWA Street; Armii Ludowej Street is renamed WILLOWA, Dąbrowszczaków to KOŚCIELNA, Janka Krasickiego to MARCINA OPITZA, 22 Lipca to LUBAŃSKA, M. Nowotki to MIKOŁAJA BRODY, K. Świerczewskiego to ZGORZELECKA, W. Wasilewskiej to KONSTANTEGO ILDEFONSA GAŁCZYŃSKIEGO, and M.R. Żymierskiego to KRZYSZTOFA KAMILA BACZYŃSKIEGO.
We remind our readers that Marcin Opitz, a distinguished German poet of the Baroque period and a courtier to the Polish king Władysław IV, was born in Bolesławiec, while Mikołaj Broda was the city’s first mayor, from 1326 onward. We wrote about these figures in “Głos Bolesławca” (“From the City’s History” and in Z. Brusiła’s article “What Street Names”).
The Resolution of the Municipal Council dated 22 December 1992 also changes, among other things, the function of the monument of gratitude located near the pond and Bank Zachodni. Following stonework, this monument will be transformed into a milestone indicating the distances from Bolesławiec to several major European cities.
