Death has been reaping an exceptional harvest lately. Time and again, we are startled by black, ominous death notices announcing that once more someone from our surroundings has passed away forever. Coronary artery disease and its final stage—heart attack—account for 50 percent of all causes of death. The average age of those affected is falling alarmingly: coronary disease once occurred in men over 60, and less frequently after the age of 50. Today, it affects people aged 40 and even 30. There are 80–90 new heart attacks each year, while the number of coronary disease cases in Bolesławiec remains steady at more than 200.
Well, we live in times of intense tension, and the state of our health is the price we must pay, especially for stress. But does the price have to be so high and so ruthless?
The situation can be alleviated and the progression of the disease halted, provided it is detected early enough. For that, however, modern and expensive equipment is needed. Our Hospital does have a computerized ECG, but this device cannot detect a pre-infarction state. A routine machine is needed to identify all heart defects and diseases, especially after a heart attack, showing the extent of the damage, whether there are complications, and so on. Such a device is an ULTRASOUND MACHINE WITH DOPPLER.
The hospital in Bolesławiec will not be able to afford the purchase of an ultrasound machine for a long time yet. There are more general and urgent needs, such as a resuscitation ambulance, modernization of the Surgical Department, and many, many other necessities.
The Social Committee for the Purchase of a Cardiac Ultrasound Machine, called “A HEART FOR THE HEART,” has been established within the Bolesławiec Enthusiasts’ Society. For now, it brings together 10 people who have already once looked death in the eye. These people have contributed the first funds and appeal to everyone who, if healthy today, may need a quick and effective diagnosis and assistance tomorrow: join us in supporting the “A HEART FOR THE HEART” campaign!
The Social Committee for the Purchase of a Cardiac Ultrasound Machine appeals to workplaces, enterprises, companies, banks, insurance firms, merchants, lawyers, doctors, and all people of goodwill: dig up a little heartfelt cash for a truly noble purpose. Why must Bolesławiec depend on Lubin or distant Wrocław? Often, getting a patient to these machines is already too late.
Is the device expensive? Yes and no. The cost of 550 million złotys could be covered by contributions of 1 million złotys from 550 wealthier companies or private individuals in the town and Bolesławiec region, or by smaller contributions if more sponsors are found in Bolesławiec, Nowogrodziec, Osiecznica, and many, many other places in our region. After all, the hospital in Bolesławiec is not only for Bolesławiec residents!
Together, we are fighting for longer lives free from fear for our hearts! Let us not be ashamed to contribute even modest sums toward the ultrasound machine: sooner or later, we will surely manage to purchase this device, which is essential for health and life. In every issue of our local newspaper, we will report on the balance of the “A HEART FOR THE HEART” account.
Contributions are accepted by PKO Bolesławiec, account no. 23618-4112-132, with the reference “A HEART FOR THE HEART”.
