In connection with the appeal issued by the local authorities and conveyed by TLB for broad participation in the discussion on new names for streets which, for obvious reasons, cannot bear the names of their current patrons, I present my proposals in this regard.
However, before moving on to the details, I would like to express the view that the simplest way to resolve this issue would be to restore the old names to the unfortunately “renamed” streets located within the old town, while as for the remaining streets, to give them names that are historically and politically neutral.
In my opinion, adopting these principles would make it possible to efficiently and calmly carry out the necessary process of freeing the city from patrons whose “achievements” consisted mainly in actively participating in the process of the communist enslavement of Poles.
In accordance with the first principle suggested above, today’s K. Świerczewskiego Street should be called Zgorzelecka, Dąbrowszczaków Street – Kościelna, while Red Army Square, which does not in fact have the form of a square, should be called Strzelecka Street. As for the remaining streets, I would propose naming them as follows: J. Krasickiego Street – Rzemieślnicza (the headquarters of the Guild of Various Crafts is located on this street), M. Nowotki Street – Leśników (to honour the decidedly demanding profession of foresters), W. Wasilewskiej Street – Wschodnia (in reference to the street’s location in the easternmost part of the city), 22 Lipca Street – Lubańska (the route out towards Lubań), M. Żymierskiego Street – Południowa (the street is situated on the southern outskirts of the detached-house estate), Armii Ludowej Street – Willowa (reflecting the character of the buildings).
In presenting my proposals, I would like to recall that Mr Zygmunt Brusiło (GB no. 1) has already spoken on this matter, and to express the hope that other lovers of Bolesławiec who care deeply about these issues will join us.
