"The Cultural Heritage of Lower Silesia," edited by Zygmunt Kłodnicki, was published in 1996 by the Polish Ethnological Society in Wrocław. A timely book, especially since 1996 was declared the Year of Cultural Heritage in Silesia. The book contains a number of important studies concerning Silesia, both from its more distant past and from the post-war period.
Most of the individual authors are employees of the Department of Ethnology at the University of Wrocław and the Ethnographic Museum in Wrocław: Zygmunt Kłodnicki, H. Wesołowska, M. Roztworowska, B. Bazelich and the late Prof. Julian Janczak. Some of the chapters—"The Former Culture of Lower Silesian Villages," "Silesian Tales and Legends," and "Cultural Traditions of the Immigrant Population – Customs and Rituals"—are truly fascinating reading, previously unknown on such a scale.
As Jolanta Ługowska wrote in the preface, "the book should be found in every school library."
The book can be ordered from the Polish Ethnological Society:
ul. Szewska 36 50-139 Wrocław
It is truly worth it!
