Under this heading, on April 20, 1996, a ceremony was held to unveil a commemorative plaque marking the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Yugoslavian Polish community in Bolesławiec. The plaque was placed on an obelisk dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Poles from the Eastern Borderlands (we wrote about this in “GB,” issue 9/95). In the presence of the city’s local-government and church authorities, as well as numerous representatives and families of the Polish community, the plaque was unveiled with the inscription: “After years of wandering, once again on our native soil – Re-emigrants from former Yugoslavia.” Following commemorative speeches by the Mayor of the City, Józef Król, the representative of the Organizing Committee, Karol Zięcik, and the plaque’s blessing by Reverend Prelate Władysław Rączka, the participants went to the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre.
The time until the late night hours was filled with the opening and viewing of the exhibition “Yugoslavia as We Remember It and as We Do Not Know It...,” performances by folk ensembles from Bolesławiec and the surrounding area, and a tasting of original Yugoslavian dishes, led by “pieczenica and rakija...”
Thanks to the volunteers from the Organizing Committee, headed by Wojciech Ilczyna, the event was a great success and left an indelible mark on the memories of its participants.
