On January 20 this year, a celebration marking the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Polish Teachers’ Union and the 50th anniversary of education in Lower Silesia took place in the recreation hall of the Firefighters’ House in Nowogrodziec.
The celebration, planned as early as last year, was given a very elaborate setting.
It was attended by retired teachers, practising teachers, school principals, invited guests and representatives of the local authorities. Among the invited guests were Superintendent A. Szustak and Walery Czarnecki, who were unfortunately absent for important reasons, as well as Jan Smolira, President of the Jelenia Góra District branch of the Polish Teachers’ Union. The representatives of the local authorities present included Edward Szczerbień, Mayor of the Municipality and Town, Wiesław Sawicki, Chairman of the Municipal and Town Council, and members of the Board and Council committees. The entire event was hosted by Teresa Drąg and Władysław Tomaszewski, teachers at the Primary School in Nowogrodziec.
During the official part, Edward Szczerbień, the Mayor, addressed the audience in warm words (he himself trained as a teacher). There were also speeches by Edward Machel and Mieczysław Swacha, who, on behalf of the pioneers active here just after the war, recalled those times. During the celebration, awards were presented, including one to Daniela Rucińska, director of the Public Kindergarten, for the very high results achieved by the institution, as well as gifts in the form of albums and books. The celebration was accompanied by an exhibition of works created by the teachers themselves and chronicles of individual schools from the post-war period to the present day.

Tomczyk Poultry Farm in Zabłocie, Krzysztof Nagórniewicz of Nowogrodziec, BZC Bolesławiec, SM “INCO” Nowogrodziec, Irena Gesner of Czerna, Jan Maziarz of Nowogrodziec, and the parents’ council at the Primary School in Nowogrodziec.
The entire celebration featured a rich programme of various artistic performances by teachers and school students.
After the official part, those interested could take part in a dance party organised by the Parents’ Council.
All those involved in preparing the celebration deserve words of thanks. The organising committee, which included, among others, Danuta Kosior and Stanisława Ojewska, rose to the occasion.
