The millennium of Silesia’s incorporation into Poland is entering its sixth year of commemorations. The year 1996 was declared the Year of the Cultural Heritage of Lower Silesia. The main organizer and initiator of all activities is the Lower Silesian Social and Cultural Association. In the program of these celebrations, we read, among other things:"Lower Silesian regionalists wish, through intensified activities, to enter the second half-century of Polish settlement in Lower Silesia after World War II and to continue their active and constructive participation in the systemic transformation initiated six years ago. Building a civil society, strengthening democracy and further developing self-government in our region and throughout the country is the foremost task for all regional associations in Lower Silesia...Activities among local communities will be developed to foster local patriotism and create Lower Silesian “small homelands.”The Bolesławiec Enthusiasts’ Association is actively joining these celebrations with its own regional program, whose main goal will be to broaden knowledge about our region under the slogan: “Small Homeland, my birthplace.”It so happens that, at the same time, a program of the Minister of National Education entitled “Cultural Heritage in the Region” has been published. The TMB plans to organize a meeting for teachers from primary and secondary schools in Bolesławiec and provide them with this program. At the same time, we want to supply teachers with basic materials for its implementation. The association plans to publish an outline of the history of Bolesławiec, which would serve young people and teachers. We would also like to publish the Bolesławiec Calendar, or rather prepare a new edition of it. Together with school principals and teachers of history, geography and Polish, TMB would like to organize a “mini-Olympiad” about the city and region. In addition, we propose organizing a competition for a short literary work (a poem or short story) about my birthplace, my “small homeland.” We also propose an art competition on the same subject. We are awaiting various proposals, about which we will inform readers in Głos Bolesławca. We count on the goodwill of the sponsors who have supported us, and on people who are not indifferent to the fate of the city...
