With the participation of nearly three hundred veterans from Bolesławiec and the surrounding area, a ceremony was held on the grounds of the 18th Rocket Regiment to mark the end of hostilities on the European continent. During the assembly, the most deserving members of the association received valuable decorations from Colonel Edward Jakubowski, the provincial president of the Association of Combatants of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners. Among the seven recipients of the prestigious medal for merit and activities benefiting the veterans’ community of all organizations cooperating in Bolesławiec in the field of social medical and surgical counseling, awarded for the great-heartedness and selflessness shown to the heroes of those days, was physician Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk. In addition, nineteen people were presented with Crosses of Veterans of the Struggle for Independence. Representatives of local-government authorities and institutions, as well as students from our schools, attended the ceremony.
That day also saw the first Convention of Veterans of the Association of Combatants of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners of the Bolesławiec Region. The newly elected president of the Association’s Municipal and Commune Branch, which had already been operating informally for nearly half a year, was retired Lieutenant Colonel Włodzimierz Kowalski. The vice-presidential duties were assumed by retired Major Antonii Świerzewski and retired Staff Sergeant Józef Puź. The secretary will be retired Captain Zbigniew Sonta, and the treasurer will be retired Senior Staff Sergeant Leszek Miketyński. The board also included: retired Captain Antoni Krasowski, retired Lieutenant Aniela Duma, retired Lieutenant Stanisław Żurowski, retired Staff Sergeant Stanisław Toporowski, retired Senior Sergeants Władysław Hołub, Kazimierz Konopka, Stanisław Rzemek, and Stanisław Zarzycki, and retired Sergeant Kazimierz Myjek. The title of honorary president was bestowed on Colonel Tadeusz Gołębiewski, a soldier of the September 1939 campaign and the Second Polish Army.
