On 22 March, the second leg of the 1996/1997 football season began in the inter-district league – Group 1.
Before the first match took place, the BKS Bolesławiec footballers completed a full training cycle. Under the direction of their new coach, Henryk Kusojć, MSc, the team stayed at a conditioning camp in Karpacz from 23 January to 1 February. On the way back to Bolesławiec, the footballers played their first friendly match of the year against the III-league leaders, KemBud Jelenia Góra (2:3). Later, at home, training sessions were interspersed with frequent control matches against: Miedź Legnica (1:6), Cement Raciborowice (10:0 and 7:0), Arka Nowa Sól (3:3), Warta Bolesławiecka (7:2 and 4:0), Chrobry Nowogrodziec (2:1), Szprotavia Szprotawa (4:1), and Piast Iłowa (2:1).
After the friendly matches, coach H. Kusojć and his assistant Stanisław Zapiór selected a 19-man squad with which they would compete for the two places that earned promotion to the III league.
