After eight years of construction, on 3 December 1996, a modern wastewater treatment plant at 48 Graniczna Street in Bolesławiec was officially opened (the first decision concerning its construction was made on 25 March 1963 by the Provincial National Council in Wrocław). The ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening of the inlet weir were performed by Jelenia Góra Voivode Janusz Pezda, in the presence and with the participation of Hubert Prabucki, chairman of the City Council, Józef Król, the mayor of the city, and Jan Molenda, director of PWiK, as well as numerous representatives of the local governments of the rural and urban communes of Bolesławiec and other invited guests from institutions that contributed to the commissioning of this important facility for the natural environment.
The investment cost 10.5 million new zlotys, almost 90% of which came from the Environmental Protection and Water Management Fund. In January 1993, the mechanical section of the wastewater treatment plant was commissioned. The biological wastewater treatment plant is now also operating.
The facility’s manager, MSc Eng. Grażyna Koroluk, explained how the treatment plant’s equipment and structures operate. The sight of clean water flowing out of the plant and into the Bóbr River was particularly pleasing. This fact will surely delight not only the residents of this part of Bolesławiec Commune, but also the residents of Zielona Góra Voivodeship. If only the banks of the Bóbr could also be free of rubbish, including the numerous plastic bags carried along by the water. This condition, however, depends largely on us and on how responsibly we use the benefits offered by the river.
The ceremony concluded with the Jelenia Góra voivode presenting certificates of recognition and decorations awarded by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Water Management to people who contributed to the commissioning of this modern treatment plant. Among others, Deputy Mayor Jan Jasiukiewicz received the Gold Badge “For Merits in Environmental Protection and Water Management.” The current “environmental” investment was not the final facility opened that year, as in mid-December 1996 a modern landfill, including waste separation facilities designed to operate for 30 years, was also commissioned in Trzebień. The waste brought there will come from both the city and Bolesławiec Commune.
