The only Museum of Antarctica in the country is located... in our town, specifically within the walls of the Tysiąclatka school. This is attested not only by the marble plaque bearing the names of the outstanding Polish writer-polar explorers Alina and Czesław Centkiewicz, but above all by the impressive collection of exhibits originating from the Southern Hemisphere and the least-known continent on Earth. Visitors can admire, among other things, a powerful whale rib measuring 3.5 metres in height (length?), as well as a dozen or so smaller bones of this mammal, including enormous vertebrae removed from its spine and transported here by Captain Tadeusz Kalicki of the Ż.W. and fishermen sailing on the “Winieta”. Seal skins, stuffed penguins, historical photographs of the Polish diaspora in Argentina, and above all a rich collection of fauna and flora specimens preserved in formalin (krill, crabs, fish, miniature octopuses and others) are further unique exhibits of which the “Ósemka” is proud. The priceless collection is complemented by rocks and stones from King George Island, as well as envelopes and stamps from the post office of Polish polar explorers at the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Henryk Arctowski Station.
