Issues of emergency means of payment appeared as a result of disruptions in the circulation of regular money. Official emergency coins in our voivodeship were issued by: Bolesławiec, Gryfów Śl., Kamienna Góra, Lubań, Lubawka and Lwówek Śl. Other localities during this period issued paper vouchers. In 1921, Bolesławiec issued two series of stoneware coins. The first consisted of 4 denominations: 5, 10, 25 and 50 pfennigs:
The 5-pfennig coin bears the coat of arms and name of the city on the obverse, along with the date 1921, and the numeral 5 pf. on the reverse;
The 10-pfennig coin bears a vase with flowers on the obverse, and the numeral 10 pf. on the reverse;
The 25-pfennig coin bears a coffee pot on the obverse, and 25 pf. on the reverse;
The 50-pfennig coin bears an image of the famous, large Bolesławiec pottery jug on the obverse, and 50 pf. on the reverse.
The second series, also made of stoneware—but crafted very carefully and artistically—also consisted of 4 denominations with similar designs and identical values. However, it bears the inscription “Notgeld der Stadt Bunzlau 1921” (Emergency money of the city of Bunzlau 1921).
Tokens from gasworks and power stations can also be included among official emergency coins, as they were subject to the municipal authorities.
Bolesławiec also issued gas meter tokens. They were made of brass, with the inscription “Gazownia Bolesławiec 1927” on the obverse and the inscription “Tyko do gazomierza” on the reverse.
