Bożena Gortych has lived in a tenement building on Ogrodowa Street for 14 years. The building is managed by the Social Housing Association, but the apartment itself belongs to the municipal authority. The woman complains that the apartment is damp. The walls are covered with mold. The kitchen floor has sunk. A crack formed in it, which Mrs. Bożena had to plug with a blanket in winter.

“As far back as I can remember, there have been no renovations,” says Bożena Gortych. – “Even the social housing units in Łąka are in better condition.” The ceiling had been leaking for 12 years. The ceiling lining was so rotten that during major roof renovations, an employee of the construction company kicked a hole in the ceiling. Mrs. Bożena was at work at the time. Her eldest son was at home. “The child was lying on the bed, and all the plaster fell onto the corner. It nearly killed him,” the Bolesławiec resident says. “I’m afraid to live here,” she adds.

“Of course, there was an inspection commission. They were concerned that the corner was damaged and that the carpeting was damaged. But the fact that the ceiling is collapsing no longer interests them,” Bożena Gortych says indignantly. As she pointed out, she had been submitting requests to renovate the apartment for 12 years. “The administrators threw up their hands. They said: what can we do? And what can I—a plain person—do?” Mrs. Bożena complains. The Bolesławiec resident informed us about the hole in the ceiling because she feared she would have to wait a long time for it to be patched.

“The hole is no longer there,” Piotr Woch, deputy director of MZGM, told us on Thursday, April 24. After our visit to Mrs. Bożena’s apartment, the ceiling lining was replaced. Today, the renovation contractor began replacing the plaster. The damp wall remains to be dealt with. “The dampness was caused by a roof leak in this location. Its cause has now been eliminated. The wall will have to dry out,” adds Piotr Woch.
