“A school serves not only an educational but also an upbringing function,” says Magdalena Gałkiewicz, a teacher at ZSHiU and co-organizer of the “Be mature – donate blood” drive. “There are currently many accidents, and many people are ill. Those who are healthy can donate blood and save someone’s life. Hence the idea of showing how one can be fully human,” she adds.

The initiative is aimed at final-year high school students from across Bolesławiec County. “I will take part because my blood type may be useful to someone else—someone who has been in an accident,” says Łukasz Markowski, a student at ZSHiU. “Maybe in a few years, a year, or a month, I will be the one needing help.” “Such campaigns should be organized more often,” adds final-year student Bernarda Gołąb.

The “Be mature – donate blood” campaign is held under the patronage of the Polish Red Cross, which has promoted voluntary blood donation for 50 years. “It is good that young people are taking up such initiatives,” emphasizes Danuta Zielińska of the Bolesławiec branch of the Polish Red Cross. “People say that nothing comes for free, yet young people want to help others. They deserve praise for taking up such campaigns.”

Final-year students from our county will be able to support the campaign on Tuesday, April 22, at the Zespół Szkół Handlowych i Usługowych in Bolesławiec. It starts at 9:00 a.m.
