The accident occurred on January 28 in the morning hours—probably a few minutes after 5:00—past Suszki (toward Lwówek Śląski). A Scania truck with a trailer, presumably due to the road surface being extremely slippery, skidded and slid into the stream, cutting through a steel bridge railing and several-ton section of its structure along the way. The Scania driver can consider himself extremely lucky. If the trailer had not been empty, the vehicle's cab could have been completely crushed. Another factor that saved the driver's life was that the vehicle initially hung on the bridge.

It was not possible to assess the extent of the vehicle's damage. Fire service units called more than two hours later found that the gearbox and diesel fuel tank had been damaged. The efficient operation by the Bolesławiec firefighters minimized any potential environmental damage.

According to a Building Supervision inspector, the bridge's load-bearing structure was not damaged. Approximately 60 liters of fuel spilled onto the road and shoulder. The stream was also slightly contaminated. However, booms were placed in the stream, neutralizing the oil slick and preventing it from spreading. The damaged vehicle and trailer were pulled out using a crane.
