The exhibition opening of works by students of the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół i Placówek Specjalnych took place at the Gallery of Talents on 21 January. Several dozen works were presented at the exhibition—both visual art and ceramics. Works surprisingly mature in character.

“Thanks to the fact that this exhibition is here, the children have grown enormously. They have seen that their work is also beautiful and that people come here and admire it. They feel valued,” says Urszula Krzywdzińska, teacher of class I PDP. As the teacher explains, not all students of the Special School have great manual skills, but their carers help them develop them.

This is supported, among other things, by art classes, during which the children draw with crayons and pastels, cut out decorations, and make works from tissue paper or cardboard. “We try to choose what is best for them so that they can create something beautiful,” Urszula Krzywdzińska notes. Thanks to the art classes, the children have the opportunity not only to develop, but also to express their emotions.

Cooperation between the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół i Placówek Specjalnych and the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury began three years ago. It started with informal meetings. “It turned out that they produced enormous results in the form of the children’s great involvement and the fact that they really wanted to come to the MDK,” recounts Zdzisława Woźniak, director of the Special School. “The women from the MDK brought out a wealth of talent. It turns out that, in the artistic sphere, our children often have greater abilities than average students. We ourselves are surprised by what they can do,” director Wożniak insists.

Art classes have such a positive effect on the students that a ceramics studio will probably open at the Special School on 1 September. Part of the building has already been allocated for this purpose. All this is intended to provide the school’s students with the best possible conditions for development.

“Some of these children have exceptional artistic abilities,” says Joanna Mysłek-Michnowska, who has been working with children requiring special care at the Bolesławiec cultural centre for three years. “It is clear that they are very eager to attend these classes,” she adds. The numerous awards won by children from PZSiPS in various competitions provide emphatic confirmation of these words.

This is already the second exhibition of works by children and young people from the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół i Placówek Specjalnych in Bolesławiec. In December last year, works by students of the Special School could be viewed in the building of the Starostwo Powiatowe.
