On January 17, the fifth edition of the “Getting to Know Our Homeland” competition was concluded in the conference room of the District Office. Thirty-six entries were submitted. Their subjects were exceptionally diverse: from historical texts to tourist, memoir and family-related works. The standard also varied. As Czesław Szmelter, who has chaired the competition jury for five years, said, some participants made overly frequent use of the intellectual work of others without citing the source.
All students received prizes. On behalf of the jurors, Czesław Szmelter warmly congratulated the competition participants and invited them to take part in the next edition.
In the primary school category, first place went to Adriana Galik of the primary school in Żeliszów for the work “Episodes from the Lives of My Ancestors”. The second prize was awarded to Aleksandra Bogielska, representing the primary school in Nowogrodziec, for the text “The Saxon Post Monument in Nowogrodziec and Its Surroundings”.
In the lower secondary school category—individual entries—first place went to Adrian Drąg from Nowogrodziec for the text “A Man with Two Hearts”. Second place went to Oliwia Kus of Lower Secondary School No. 4 in Bolesławiec for the work “A Page from a Family Diary”.
There were also prizes in the team categories and for a multimedia work—the latter was won by Krzysztof Kozicki of Primary School No. 1 in Bolesławiec. He was awarded for the work “Kruszyn—My Favourite Places”.
The prizes were presented by, among others: Bolesławiec Deputy Mayor Maciej Małkowski, Dariusz Kwaśniewski, a member of the Bolesławiec District Board, Krystyna Boratyńska, head of the Social Affairs Department of the City Office, and Helena Szymula. The competition jury consisted of Czesław Szmelter and Andrzej Olejniczak.
