The opening of the exhibition by Zygmunt Sarna, an Olszanica resident in his daily life, took place on October 19 at the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury gallery. Zygmunt Sarna is, among other things, the winner of first place in the prestigious “Nikifor of Lower Silesia 2007” competition. His exhibition can be visited for the next two weeks.
The Olszanica artist has been painting since the age of 16. His love of art was awakened by a Wrocław painter who came to Olszanica to renovate the local church. It was he who noticed that Zygmunt Sarna had talent.
Sarna is an amateur painter. He has never attended professional art classes. This does not change the fact that he can definitely be described as a versatile artist, much like his master—the great Leonardo da Vinci. The Olszanica resident not only paints, but also sculpts, takes photographs, and makes casts in concrete and plaster. Metalwork also plays an important role in his artistic work.
Asked about his sources of inspiration, Zygmunt Sarna replies: “life itself suggests subjects.” Nevertheless, the works gathered at the Bolesławiec exhibition show that sacred art is very important to the artist. Another frequently recurring motif in Sarna’s paintings is historic monuments. There are also references to contemporary times. One of the works refers to the recent tragedy at the “Halemba” mine.
“I want to devote myself to art,” the Olszanica painter confesses. – “I want to be an example and a model for others, showing that something can be done; you just need a lot of willingness and hard work. Practice makes perfect. I will strive to reach the elite of the best.” Moreover, next year Sarna intends to open a studio so that he can reveal the secrets of painting to everyone interested. “I will paint for as long as I live,” the painter promises.
