The accident occurred late Wednesday evening. After 10:40 p.m., firefighters received a report that a man was in the river beneath the railway viaduct, approximately 10 metres from the bank, and could not get out of the water. A girl walking along the Bóbr River noticed him and called for help. It turned out that the man’s leg was trapped between rocks.
Firefighters rushed to the rescue. Rescuer Dominik Sługocki swam to the man and secured him with a rope, then dived underwater to free the drowning man’s leg. They succeeded. The man was pulled onto the bank. He was found to have symptoms of hypothermia and a sprained knee joint.
“The rescue operation looked very serious. The river current was strong and the water was very cold. The man would not have lasted much longer,” Sylwester Łasocha, a firefighter who took part in the operation, told Boleslawiec.org.
An ambulance took the injured man to hospital. We do not yet know how the accident happened.
