Far fewer heavy goods vehicles enter the city centre than in the past. On a typical day, over six hours between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., several hundred heavy goods vehicles pass along Zgorzelecka Street in both directions combined—previously, before the bypass was built, there were several thousand.
Unfortunately, passenger-car traffic is steadily increasing. During the same six hours, around 10,000 such vehicles pass along Zgorzelecka Street. Nevertheless, the situation is better than several years ago, when an endless stream of cars encircled the city around every holiday.
An Imperfect Bypass
Although the city has a bypass, situations in which we see queues of cars occur frequently. There are two places on the bypass where problems with traffic flow often arise. The first is the intersection with Dolne Młyny Street; the second is the signal-controlled intersection on Staszica Street. In both cases, cars turning left off the bypass and waiting for a green light block traffic. One possible solution would be to widen the carriageway at these locations so that vehicles turning left could use a separate lane.
