Monday, October 5 “Julieta”

A gripping story about a mother searching for her daughter, who disappeared without a trace many years ago. A tale of the extreme feelings we experience towards those closest to us and the secrets we keep from them. Julieta is a middle-aged woman living in Madrid. A chance meeting with Beatriz, her daughter’s friend, brings back memories. Julieta begins writing them down, leading to a confrontation with the past. She must face the strength of her love for the fisherman Xoan, whom she lost in a fatal accident. This film adaptation of stories by Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro shows that the enduring strength of Almodóvar’s cinema lies in its faith in the power of feelings and love.

Monday, October 10 “Hell or High Water”

A modern crime film set in West Texas, in places ruled by violence and lawlessness. Two brothers—Toby (Chris Pine), a desperate father seeking a better life for his son, and Tanner (Ben Foster), an ex-convict with an explosive temperament—decide to rob a bank branch that foreclosed on their indebted family land. The robbery succeeds, but things quickly spiral out of control. Marcus (Jeff Bridges), a relentless Texas Ranger seeking his last moments of glory before retirement, sets out in pursuit of the brothers. Despite the police manhunt, Toby and Tanner, tempted by the prospect of quick profits, decide to carry out another major heist. A confrontation between the brothers and the tenacious lawman seems inevitable.

Monday, October 17 “Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World”

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog records the history of the virtual world, from its beginnings to its most far-reaching manifestations. The journey begins at the very origins of the digital revolution—we are in a room at the University of California from which the first email was sent in 1969. Herzog demonstrates that the moment when the internet begins to “dream about itself” is already very near. He takes viewers through a series of provocative conversations showing how the internet has transformed virtually every element of the real world—from business and education to space travel, healthcare and, ultimately, personal relationships.

Monday, October 24 “Belgica”

The film tells the story of two brothers. Frank is an impulsive, attention-grabbing womanizer who, despite having a wife and a young son, does not shy away from entertainment. His one-eyed brother Jo, meanwhile, is younger but seems more mature. Jo owns a small establishment called “Belgica.” The brothers decide to turn the bar into a legendary venue with good music. Belgica becomes a success, but this does not translate into every area of their lives. Precisely constructed and fast-paced, the story shows that every path to success requires sacrifice.

Monday, October 31 “I, Daniel Blake”

An incredibly moving and humorous story about a mature man who decides to help a single mother with two children get back on her feet. However, when he himself begins applying for benefits, he becomes trapped in a heartless bureaucratic machine straight out of a Franz Kafka novel. Despite the indifference of officials and the successive challenges they must face in everyday life, Daniel and Katie rediscover the joy of life and true friendship.
