Female sexuality has once again become a political issue. Women are shouting, "Hands off our wombs!", while their wombs are becoming... the property of the nation. Every child born to a Polish woman is not a valuable gift to the world, society or family, but her damn duty. If she does not fulfill it, she will be punished. Pro-life advocate, have you ever looked at the matter this way? Or do you only fantasize about how heroically you save innocent babies from maternal slaughter?
All pro-life advocates, you must know that you are taking great responsibility upon yourselves for all those unwanted lives coming into the world. You can force a woman to give birth, but you cannot force a child's parents to love it. Passing a law saying, "You're in the world, great; later you may end up in an orphanage" is not a victory. It is the cynical work of religious fanatics. You wash your hands immediately after dragging a humiliated, pregnant woman to the delivery room and making sure she gives birth. Does it give you pleasure? Do you feel better, holier, fulfilled?
Why do I believe that there should be no abortion law in Poland (or anywhere in the world)? Because women have the right to freedom, to make their own choices and to bear the personal consequences of their decisions.
Because love cannot be forced, and the decision to terminate a pregnancy is often made for a woman by the child's father or by her family. They are the ones who do not accept the child who is about to be born. She is merely carrying out their wishes.
Because women who want to give birth will do so regardless, and will love and care for their children; those who do not want to or cannot give birth will not, and forcing them to do so is inhumane.
In countries with strict abortion laws, society is cut off from reliable knowledge about sexual health and access to contraception is restricted, turning those countries into vast human hatcheries where sexuality is a dirty subject and taboo. And children in those countries, left to fend for themselves, learn about something as beautiful and life-giving as desire, pleasure and physical love from pornographic films. Is this what you want for your children once they are born?
