This year’s Bolesławiec City Days celebrations refer in their format to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome—the treaties establishing the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community, which laid the foundations for the European Union. This is also connected with the project to obtain the Council of Europe Prize, known as the European Diploma.

The two-day family and recreational event will be held in the city centre, at Piłsudski Square and the green area beside the Bolesławiecki Ośrodek Kultury. Saturday’s programme will be hosted by Elizabeth Duda and Conrado Moreno, known from the television programme “Europa da się lubić”. The artistic programme—in an original format depicting a journey through Europe—will be performed by winners of “Szansa na sukces” and “Droga do gwiazd”. Local performers will also appear on stage. The event will begin with the PSM “Kamerton” choir and the Big Band from the sister city of Ceska Lipa, Low Attendance Band. Flamenco dancers taking part in workshops at the Bolesławiecki Ośrodek Kultury will present Sevilliera, Tango de Malaga and Tango Peltitti. They will be accompanied by outstanding musicians Robert Gawron and Wojciech Malko, who plays the original kacho instrument. The Bolesławiec-based group Pireus will introduce us to the atmosphere of Greece. The evening will conclude with a Muzyczne Radio event—“Dancing Europe”. There will also be competitions with prizes.

On Sunday at noon, we invite you to an outdoor, colourful show about friendly fairy-tale creatures, one of which falls in love with a frog: “Z Życia Smoków, Sceny Uliczne Nie Tylko Dla Dorosłych”, performed by actors from Teatr Jeleniogórski—Scena Animacji. Children’s and youth dance groups will perform during the Bolesławiec 2007 modern dance showcase. The showcase will be judged by a professional jury, and winners in the individual categories will receive cups, diplomas and material prizes. The event will conclude with a hip-hop concert by Kasia Wilk and Mezo.

The artistic programme on the main stage will be accompanied by photographic and artistic installations organised in cooperation with the Promotion Department of the City Office and the Miejski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji. Exhibitions of materials, photographs and designs concerning European (Euroregional) artistic and sporting events will be presented.

Sporting events will also provide an excellent way to spend free time during Bolesławiec City Days. The Miejski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji invites everyone to the swimming pool on Saturday, where the “Bolesławiecka Setka Pływacka” will be held. The 100-metre competitions in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday’s programme includes the “Bolesławieckie Święto Szachów”. At 10:00 a.m., an international chess meeting will begin in the conference room of the Starostwo Powiatowe, followed at 3:00 p.m. by an outdoor simultaneous chess exhibition. The sporting competition will be accompanied by an exhibition of chess motifs from the collection and by the work of Zbigniew Kaźmierski, presented at tournaments in Poland and abroad, an exhibition of “chess humour” and the outdoor show “Żywe Szachy”.

Muzeum Ceramiki will present the exhibition “fikcja literacka i prawda historyczna”—the Hussites’ capture of the city in 1429. Miejska Biblioteka is organising two exhibitions: an informative exhibition about the countries of the European Union and an exhibition of tapestries by Teresa Bancewicz, accompanied by a meeting with the artist under the slogan “Z centrum świata, aż po jego krańce”.

Traffic arrangements in the city centre will change for the duration of the event. From 12 to 13 May, Asnyka and Sierpnia ’80 Streets will be closed to traffic from their intersection with Karola Miarki Street (by the high-rise building) to the Market Square. Piłsudski Square will be closed from 11 to 14 May.
