The wet-plate collodion technique was invented by Frederic Scott Archer in the mid-19th century. Wet-plate collodion has two variants: negative (a negative image on transparent glass, which can be copied onto light-sensitive paper) and positive (a positive image on a glass support). A characteristic feature of wet-plate collodion is that the entire process must be completed within 20 minutes; after that time, further chemical processing is not possible.
