On Thursday, 28 July, Skanska signed an agreement with the Lower Silesian Service for Roads and Railways in Wrocław to carry out this project. The contract is worth more than PLN 22 million net.

South-eastern Bolesławiec bypass

“This year we will begin the stage involving the construction of the south-eastern Bolesławiec bypass along DW 297 (km 0+000–3+998.10; stage III),” says Paweł Kurkowski, roadworks manager at Skanska. “In accordance with the formula under which this section will be delivered—‘optimise and build’—we are starting by adapting the designed road elements to the current technical conditions and optimising traffic-management designs in line with current requirements and regulations. We will then build a 4-kilometre road section 8 metres wide and two roundabouts: one on provincial road no. 363 Bolesławiec–Złotoryja and one on provincial road no. 297 Bolesławiec–Lwówek Śląski. We will also reconstruct the intersection with county road no. 2280D. To ensure grade-separated passage for the municipal road, we will build a 21-metre-long, 8.70-metre-wide road viaduct. A cycle path will be built along the entire length of the section for cyclists. Noise barriers more than 400 metres long will help address traffic noise. In addition, we will reconstruct conflicts with power, water and sewage, telecommunications and gas networks, and install street lighting in the roundabout areas.

Safe turbo roundabout

“As part of the second stage, we are to deliver a turbo roundabout in Kruszyn under a ‘design and build’ formula,” adds Paweł Kurkowski. “The roundabout will have five approaches and connect the new DW 297 bypass with national road no. 94, the entrance to the town via Tysiąclecia Avenue and access to the Kruszyn housing estate. We plan to complete the design by spring 2017, after which construction work will begin.

A turbo roundabout is an innovative solution that enables traffic to flow through an intersection without conflicts, ensuring an even higher level of safety. One like this will be built in Kruszyn. Its specific feature is that the traffic streams in the outer and inner lanes do not cross. This solution allows vehicles to naturally move towards the appropriate exits, reducing the risk of collisions. It will be considerably safer!”

“As part of the project, we will use 150,000 tonnes of sand, approximately 125,000 tonnes of stabilisation material, 35,000 tonnes of aggregate and 35,000 tonnes of mineral-bituminous mixtures,” Skanska representatives say.

Using BIM technology

“We will carry out the contract using 3D technology,” says Michał Kubów, project manager at Skanska. “During earthworks and surfacing works, we will use machinery equipped with automatic-control systems. We have already used this modern technology at the tender stage. Its application, combined with on-site observations, the elevation survey and the geological analysis, enabled us to create a three-dimensional spatial model of the project. This model was used for a detailed analysis and assessment of the terrain conditions and implementation assumptions, resulting in the preparation of the most optimal tender offer; during construction, it will enable the works to be carried out with very high precision.

Nothing but benefits

“We are beginning a project of great importance to the municipality and the province,” says Witold Nietubyć, director of the Engineering Construction Branch in Wrocław. “The Bolesławiec bypass will bring numerous benefits to drivers and residents. It will reduce transit traffic on the Jelenia Góra–DK 94, A4 and A18 route. Drivers will gain shorter journey times and improved safety. The project will also help reduce wear on streets in the urban area. Living conditions for Bolesławiec residents will improve, as traffic, noise and vibration levels will be significantly reduced. We are pleased that these benefits are recognised—it gives us, the bypass contractor, confidence that we are building something that benefits society.
