Healthy food, healthy person. A guide to positive nutrition

Have you, dear readers, ever wondered whether we really influence the quality of our lives, health and well-being, as well as the health of our children? In our search for answers, we have often encountered an overwhelming amount of information that is difficult to organise into a coherent whole. Many of us would like to begin a new chapter entitled “healthy eating”, but amid the multitude of everyday matters and the amount of contradictory information coming to us from the media and our surroundings, we are often discouraged, confused and reluctant to devote some of our time and effort to paying attention to what we eat, what products we give our children, and to considering whether, out of kindness and love for our children, we might sometimes be harming them by choosing products and dishes that are not suitable for their small bodies—bodies that need good products from which they can draw everything most valuable so that they can develop physically and emotionally to the highest level.

Good nutrition for children

Undoubtedly, the powerhouse that gives our little treasures the energy and strength for wonderful growth is food, which can have either a constructive or destructive power. To help our children develop in health and harmony, we should take a closer look at what they eat throughout the day. It is worth investing a little of our valuable time in learning about nutritious products and those that should be put on the blacklist.

I realise that in today’s hectic and fast-paced times everything seems difficult and sometimes impossible, so I would like to dispel a few myths… such as the belief that healthy eating requires a great deal of effort, is expensive and time-consuming, and certainly not tasty. I would like you to give yourselves a little time, not become discouraged, and invest in health on your plate, because it is a wonderful investment that will quickly bear fruit in the form of health, strength, well-being, concentration, calm, smiles and relief from health problems—not only for our children but for ourselves as well.

Herbs as guardians of health. How to avoid antibiotics

From experience, I know that health can be built and restored through food, that herbs stand guard over our health, and that children can be healthy despite all adversity. I am the mother of Mikołakj, aged 5, and Olcia, aged 4, two healthy, energetic and cheerful children. However, it was not always this way. Mikołakj’s health problems began when he was 18 months old; he was constantly taking antibiotics and was diagnosed with recurrent bronchitis and pneumonia.

I remember a time when, within six months, my son had bronchitis six times and pneumonia twice—a difficult time for the family. After extensive searching and tests, the diagnosis finally came: bronchial asthma and a severe allergy. The time had come to look for alternatives to steroids and antibiotics in treating our child. Nature and wise people came to our aid, explaining that good nutrition and herbs are the key to the health of every child and adult.

I am a psychopedagogue by training, and natural therapies are my second passion. I have trained and continue to develop in this field. I want to make you aware that it is worth beginning to care for the health of ourselves and our loved ones; it is worth making the decision, and then everything will work in our favour. Suddenly, we find knowledgeable people and places for mutual exchange, learning and shopping, along with unlimited possibilities; suddenly, taking care of our health turns out to be enjoyable and tasty.

Where to begin making changes?

What can you do to make healthy eating a habit and ensure that it is not difficult for you? You are probably wondering where to begin this fantastic adventure of renewal through food. Once we have decided that we want to be healthy in the long term, we take action. First, we tidy up the refrigerator and kitchen cupboards!

Blacklist of products

Products that should disappear from our kitchen and end up in the bin.

  1. All kinds of spreads stuffed with preservatives and flavour enhancers; processed meat and fish products (ready-made cold cuts, pâtés, fish salads, etc.); all canned products (meat, fish, vegetables)
  2. Stock cubes containing monosodium glutamate (almost all those currently on the market)
  3. Instant soups, powdered salad dressings, meal mixes, chicken seasoning containing monosodium glutamate, jellies, puddings and gelatine desserts that contain no natural ingredients
  4. Powdered and liquid seasonings containing monosodium glutamate (Kucharek, Vegeta, Jarzynka, Maggi), synthetic cake flavourings, vanillin sugar, etc.
  5. Store-bought ketchup, mayonnaise, sauces, dressings, etc.
  6. Margarines and margarine-butter blends (these are harmful hardened fats)
  7. Spreads packed with refined fats and white sugar (such as Nutella, Snickers, etc.)
  8. Jams, syrups and preserves sweetened with white sugar
  9. Crisps, cheese puffs, caramel-coated nuts and similar “snacks”
  10. White sugar and its products (supplies of sweets, chocolates, biscuits and similar items), as well as synthetic sweeteners
  11. Refined white salt
  12. Refined vegetable oils
  13. White flour and its products (bread and pasta made from white flour, crackers, breadsticks, rusks, etc.)
  14. White rice
  15. Store-bought ready-made breakfast cereals and ready-made muesli
  16. Frozen chips, pizzas, hamburgers and fish fingers
  17. Carbonated and energy drinks
  18. Fruit yoghurts, homogenised cheese, flavoured buttermilk and kefir sweetened with white sugar
  19. UHT milk, processed cheese, UHT cream and all industrially processed dairy products

After such an operation, we may conclude that we essentially have nothing to eat. However, we would be mistaken: in fact, the only things left in the cupboards and refrigerators are real food! Do not worry, though—if there is little left, everything can be replaced with tasty and healthy alternatives. How? That will be covered in the next article.
