Last week, Bolesławiec was hit several times by severe storms bringing between 25 mm and 35 mm of rain, and locally as much as 50 mm. These were the first such intense rainfalls since the revitalization of the retention reservoir on Jeleniogórska Street, which collects water from the “Złoty Potok” forest stream. On June 17, the water filled the reservoir to the brim, retaining rainwater from the stream and preventing the streets in this area from being flooded.
It is worth recalling that work to rebuild the retention reservoir in the former military area on Jeleniogórska Street was completed in 2015. During the modernization, a recreational area was also created on the site. The resulting complex operates under the name “Leśny potok.” “The retention reservoir on Jeleniogórska Street is intended to protect against flooding during torrential rain. Retaining rainwater is particularly important in this regard,” emphasizes Bolesławiec Mayor Piotr Roman.
Even before the war, the reservoir was used as a recreational site. It also served as a retention reservoir collecting water from the “Złoty Potok” forest stream and regulated the hydrological conditions of the forest complex. During World War II, the facility was partially destroyed and was used by the military until the end of the 1970s. Thanks to the revitalization of the water reservoir in 2015, a small-retention facility was restored, helping to organize the city’s hydrological and flood-protection situation.
