This year, the school and its principal, Barbara Dąbrowska-Bugaj, were awarded the “Pro Patria” medal (“for the homeland”). The “Pro Patria” medal is granted by the Head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Repression on the basis of a documented application submitted by the supreme authorities of veterans’ and repression victims’ organizations, as well as by regional and district government and local-government administration bodies, Polish diplomatic missions and military attachés’ offices. It is awarded to individuals and legal entities who have made particular contributions to preserving the memory of the struggle for the independence of the Republic of Poland.

These anniversaries are a school holiday to which we invite Home Army veteran soldiers, city authorities, representatives of municipal educational institutions, and the entire school and local community. There are no classes on this day—we simply celebrate! We are glad that there are still people who can tell us about all these events; for our students, it is a living history lesson.

Our school, as well as its principal, Barbara Dąbrowska-Bugaj, and teachers Melania Balińska and Elżbieta Zielonka, received the “Badge of Merit for the ZKRPIBWP,” the highest veterans’ distinction awarded by the Union of Veterans of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners.

School Holiday 2016

On 16 May 2016, classes VI a and VI b, together with their form teachers, Małgorzata Sacher and Agnieszka Markowicz, prepared a ceremonial assembly for the School Holiday, dedicated to the school’s patron, the Home Army. The performance combining spoken word and music presented the history of the Home Army and its soldiers during the war and in the difficult post-war reality to the guests and school community gathered there. The ceremony aimed to remind everyone how important the words God, Honour and Homeland, as well as Freedom, are to Poles.

During the assembly, Zdzisław Abramowicz, president of the Bolesławiec branch of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, received the “Badge of Merit for the ZKRPIBWP” from Edmund Błaszczyk, Vice-President of the District Board of the Union of Veterans of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners in Jelenia Góra.

The guests received gifts: hearts made by students under the guidance of Elżbieta Zielonka. Special thanks go to the parents of students in classes IV–VI for helping to finance the gifts.

After the assembled guests’ ceremonial speeches, refreshments prepared by our students’ parents were served. Thank you!
