A forty-five-kilometre section of the A4 motorway is to be built between Bolesławiec and Zgorzelec. The motorway is part of both Pan-European Transport Corridor No. III and the European E40 route, which connects cities such as Ostend, Cologne, Wrocław, Kraków and Kyiv. Work on the Zgorzelec–Krzyżowa section is expected to begin in several days. Contracts for the construction of this section were signed on 9 November last year.
The section from Krzyżowa to Wykroty will be built by the Austrian company Strabag. The section from Wykroty to Zgorzelec will be built by French companies: DTP Terrasement and Bouygues Travaux Publics. The total cost of the 52-kilometre motorway section is estimated at more than €307 million. 83% of this amount is funding from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund. The work is expected to continue until December 2008. If the deadline is exceeded, the EU grant will be lost.
