Polskie Koleje Państwowe are cancelling trains running from Wrocław abroad. From December, it will no longer be possible to travel by train to Berlin, Dresden or Bratislava. The railway operator explains the cuts by saying the connections are unprofitable.
Many people are wondering why the tracks are being renovated if only local trains are supposed to run on them. The answer is simple. Trains operated, among others, by Deutsche Bahn (the German railway company) will run on the tracks.
Fast, without stopping
On our route, western InterCity trains are supposed to travel at 160 km/h. Wonderful? No. On the Polish side, the first stop for the German train will be in Zgorzelec, and the second... in Wrocław. The German carrier will be able to decide where to stop.
Fewer and fewer people believe in Polish railways. As recently as July, PKP representatives assured attendees at a meeting in Bolesławiec that no final decision had been made to suspend some connections. Now we know what will happen—the German railway will profit.
