At the scene, the officers determined that the smoke was coming from the building at 22 Podwale Street. They carried out an inspection but found no evidence of waste burning.
The officers noticed that, apart from a large amount of smoke, sparks were coming out of the chimney. There was a risk that the soot could catch fire. The fire service was called to the scene; it confirmed that the soot had ignited and began firefighting operations.
