This is the goal of two white scientists whom the shaman accompanies for 40 years. Their journey slowly turns into a mysterious expedition to the heart of darkness. The two journeys, during which the shaman guides the scientists through the Amazon, intersect repeatedly, evoking a sense of the timelessness of the place where they take place. The scientists realize that the logic guiding them is useless in a world of myths and rituals more real than science. Much awaits them along the way: from cannibalism to degenerate cults that have grown out of Catholicism.

The film depicts a phantasmagorical journey both deep into the Amazon and into oneself. We observe a world of intuition, in which chance, madness and magic play equally important roles. The associations with Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” and its source, Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” are not accidental. The black-and-white film was based on travel diaries from the Colombian Amazon written by the German Theodor Koch-Grunberg and the American Richard Evans Schultes.
