In a single New Year’s Eve night, we set off more fireworks than during the entire year. During this time, several hundred burns, injuries and fires, as well as even fatal accidents, occur across the European Union. Most are caused by improper use of fireworks and failure to follow safety rules. Let us remember that fireworks are explosive materials and must be used carefully and in accordance with the instructions. Police officers regularly inspect commercial outlets offering fireworks and intervene when the ban on their use is violated.

Let us remember that the law prohibits the use of pyrotechnic products in public places, except on 31 December and 1 January. Premature pyrotechnic experiments and setting off leftovers are prohibited by law. Most municipalities have introduced temporary restrictions on the use of pyrotechnic materials. In particularly justified cases, during the period covered by the ban on their use, permission to use pyrotechnic materials is issued by the relevant wójt, mayor or city president.

Let us remember:

  • restrictions on the use of fireworks are imposed both by the Misdemeanours Code and by local-law provisions
  • selling fireworks or firecrackers to minors is a crime, and anyone who commits such an act is subject to a fine, restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to 2 years
  • let us inform the police about traders who sell firecrackers to children. This will protect the youngest, who are often victims of fireworks
  • under no circumstances should children set off fireworks; they must remain under the constant supervision of adults
  • let us buy fireworks from verified, reputable sellers and follow the instructions displayed on the fireworks packaging.

Before purchasing pyrotechnic materials, check whether:

  • the casing has no mechanical defects: cracks, breaks, dents or bulges
  • the component parts are properly connected and do not move
  • the manufacturer’s name and address details are provided
  • a product intended to be positioned vertically on the ground or buried in the earth is equipped with fittings allowing it to be positioned properly so as to prevent it from toppling or tilting during operation
  • a firecracker intended to be held in the hand has a handle ensuring safe holding while burning (we should never try to set off pyrotechnic devices not intended for this purpose by hand!)
  • an operating manual in Polish is included, containing at least information on how to set it off and safety warnings for use.

When using pyrotechnic products, remember:

  • pyrotechnic products and setting them off are dangerous activities, so they may only be set off under adult supervision
  • read the instructions, strictly follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and pay attention to the warnings. A firecracker that suddenly explodes can cause not only burns to the hands and face, but also more serious bodily injuries, such as loss of sight, fingers or an entire hand
  • when using fireworks, choose a place where no one will be harmed and nothing will be damaged. Check that there are no trees or power lines in the projectile’s path. Pyrotechnic products must not be used indoors or near objects at risk of fire
  • keep a safe distance – it is specified in the operating instructions. Never lean over the charge – stand to the side and hold the ignition source at arm’s length
  • do not set off firecrackers while intoxicated or in circumstances that could endanger others
  • if, after setting off a firework or after the fuse has burned out, it turns out that it did not explode, do not approach it to check what happened
  • the noise of firecrackers disturbs animals, especially dogs. Let us therefore ensure that our four-legged friends do not disturb others’ peace and are not exposed to the sounds of explosions
  • if an accident occurs, call the emergency services: the fire brigade and ambulance service.

Firecrackers, rockets, torches and Roman candles are inseparable elements of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Let us remember to buy them thoughtfully, in accordance with the principles of common sense! LET US WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT THE END OF THE OLD YEAR AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW YEAR ARE PLEASANT AND SAFE FOR ALL OF US.
